Midstream oil and gas facilities operate continuous, motor-driven electrical loads supporting petroleum storage and processing operations. Induction motors driving mixing systems can create elevated reactive power and inefficient current flow, increasing thermal stress on motors while reducing overall electrical system efficiency. XCT was engaged to evaluate and improve power quality performance at a midstream facility supporting large-scale petroleum storage operations.

Measured Energy Savings
Power Factor Post-Installation
The Challenge

The facility operated multiple AC induction motors driving mixing systems within large petroleum storage tanks under sustained operating conditions. Electrical performance analysis identified low power factor and elevated reactive power circulating through the system, contributing to excess current draw and increased thermal stress on motors.

These conditions reduced overall electrical efficiency and placed additional strain on motor-driven equipment operating in a mission-critical midstream environment.

The Solution

XCT deployed proprietary, patented power tuning technology installed in Class I, Division 2–rated enclosures adjacent to the induction motors. The system dynamically tuned electrical energy to a stable 60 Hz operating condition, allowing motors to perform the same mechanical work while drawing less amperage.

The installation was completed in less than three days and integrated seamlessly with existing electrical infrastructure without disrupting facility operations.

The Results

Post-installation measurements demonstrated measurable improvements in electrical performance:

  • 10.5% reduction in total utility costs, including energy charges, billing demand, fuel adjustment, and taxes
  • Power factor improvement from approximately 70% to 96%
  • Reactive power (kVAR) reduction of approximately 60%
  • Reduced thermal stress on motors, supporting improved reliability

These improvements reflect a cleaner, more stable electrical environment for motor-driven mixing systems.

The Impact

By improving power factor and reducing reactive power at the motor level, the facility enhanced electrical efficiency while reducing stress on critical equipment. The project delivered measurable cost savings and improved operational reliability without requiring major infrastructure changes.

The solution demonstrated a scalable approach for midstream oil and gas operations seeking to improve electrical performance across motor-driven assets, including mixers, pumps, compressors, and similar applications.
